On the 10th of December 2005 Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug will celebrate its anniversary - 75 years since establishment.
Square: 534.8 thousand km. Population: 1480.6 thousand people. Ugra consists of 14 towns of Okrug subordination, 2 towns of district subordination, 9 districts. Administrative centre is Khanty-Mansiysk.
Nowadays Autonomous Okrug is one of the most economically stable regions of Russia. It provides the biggest part of budget receipts.
57% of annual oil production in Russia and 7% of the world oil production is output on the territory of Ugra. As for the natural gas production the Okrug is on the 2nd place in the country.
Most of Ugra is treed with cedar, pine tree, fur-tree, larch, birch, aspen, etc. Okrug fund composes 3.8% of the Russian forest fund.
At the present time Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug becomes interesting and popular not only in Russia, but also all over the world. It has close cooperation with Finland, Canada, Hungary, Germany, Great Britain, USA, China, Japan, Ukraine, and Belarus. Ugra is a member of the International Association “Northern Forum”, a member of the Finno-Ugric Association. It has working partnerships with IBU (International Biathlon Union) and with the Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to UNESCO.
In Ugra a positive situation for attraction of foreign investments was created. The most flourishing spheres are oil and solid minerals production (including gold, base metals, optical quartz etc.), wood using complex.
«Standard&Poor’s» agency assigned to the Okrug a credit rating in the foreign exchange ''BB'' with ''Positive'' prognosis.
In 2001 Information Technology Research Institute consisting of Earth remote sensing centre and of one of the biggest in Russia computer centers was established. Citizens and guests of the Okrug can use high-speed access to the Internet.
Modern infrastructure that meets international standards was created in the Okrug. Motor, airline, railway and water services bear transportation burden in all directions within Russia and abroad.
Hotels of the Okrug have all the necessary services and provide comfort accommodation. Entertainment industry is being created.
These changes become a determinant for active development of tourism in Ugra. One of the most popular trends is ethnographic tourism, which helps to learn the culture of indigenous peoples of the North: Khanty and Mansy while communicating with them in the national settlements and camps of nomads. Hunting and fishing tours in distant settlements of Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug are not less popular. Business and event tourism is steadily developing due to the economy development and conduction of international sports, scientific and cultural events.
Ugra has great cultural potential. Cultural institutes – area and art museums, musical-dramatic theatres, puppet theatres, expositions, libraries have the aim to support local talents, provide cultural development of people. Renaissance and maintenance of the original culture of the indigenous peoples, their cultural heritage and traditions is the priority for the authorities of the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug.
Sport occupies a special place in the development of positive attitude towards healthy life-style and is the main part of the social policy of the Government. Russian and international competitions – biathlon, volleyball, boxing, northern national all-around competitions, tennis, chess are held on the Ugra land.
International Television Programs and Films Festival ''Gold Tabret'', international ecological action “Save and Preserve”, International Musical Festival ''Ugra'', Theatrical Festival ''Chaika'', International Festival of the Cinematographic Debuts ''Spirit of Fire'' are annually held on the territory of the Autonomous Okrug.
Conduction of great international events on the Ugra land opens up new vistas for self-actualization in different spheres of life.
